2017 Workshops

Spring workshop: Shropshire, England. May 8-12, 2017.

Katherine will be running an icon painting workshop between Monday May 8 to Friday 12 in 2017 at the beautiful stately home Walcot Hall in Shropshire.

In the May course we shall concentrate on garment painting,  flesh and hair will be covered but are not the main focus.

Katherine will provide students with an icon example for everyone to work from: we learn both the ‘membrane’ and ‘proplasmos’ methods of using traditional egg tempera and pigments. As well as refining our drawing techniques and deepening our knowledge of the icon and Orthodox teaching about them, there is plenty of time for questions and advice on working methods for beginners and experienced students. All working from the same icon example allows us to concentrate on technique and form and maximises individual teaching time.

Set in the lush, peaceful countryside of rural Shropshire in the border between England and Wales, Walcot Hall  has superb self-catering accommodation and we use one of the largest apartments as a studio. The studio is fully accessible and on the ground floor. The stable courtyard has cobblestones and students with mobility issues should contact Katherine directly to discuss their needs.

Materials and Equipment

Students are advised to contact Katherine about the board required, she also offers the chance to buy pigments and brushes as a kit at the course if ordered in advance – particularly useful if coming from overseas. Otherwise, a list of materials needed, a good quality image of the icon to be painted and instructions on preparing your board will be emailed to students once the full course fee is paid.

The caterer is able to provide meals for all dietary requirements and meals follow the traditional fasting pattern of the Orthodox Church – vegan on Wednesday and Friday. Breakfast food is provided for a continental style breakfast of the students choice, while a fully cooked lunch and morning and afternoon coffee are included.

  •  Tuition, morning and afternoon coffee and substantial cooked lunches cost £350, with a £30 deposit (non-refundable) to reserve a place.
  • Self-catering accommodation at Walcot Hall from Monday to Friday cost £190 per person with a £20 deposit (non-refundable) to reserve a place.
