Recharging on daily walks in the woods near by, I wondered how I could depict trees in a way that was coherent with the medieval Byzantine style of traditional icons. These complex layered studies show trees in their ‘energeia’ – their energies, their responses to God. They are not based on ‘actual’ trees but are embodied movement and representations of what trees could be, in icons.
The khadi paper is unstretched but carries layers of egg tempera beautifully, the texture not disappearing but catching the light with the reflective quality of paint which isn’t easily shown in photographs or prints. These paintings come wrapped in acid free tissue, securely held between two cardboard pieces and posted flat. They are ideal for mounting on board to show the deckled edge at the bottom of the sheet.
