Each Liturgy we sing the “Cherubic Hymn” and I am fascinated by the depiction of various ranks of angels in traditional Orthodox iconography. the “Six winged seraphim” are among the better known and I wanted to see how I could depict them using only three colours – red ochre, titanium white and iron black. What began as an experiment became a real sense of how strange and otherworldly the heavenly realm can be.
Using simple watercolour paper and layer upon layer of egg tempera with pigment, these translucent washes build up to a depth and richness that is hard to capture on screen. It would suit being float-mounted, so that the full edges are visible. Only one available, a dark rich red, and will be posted wrapped carefully in acid free tissue, securely held between two layers of firm card and posted flat, to ensure the safety of the piece.
